The Useless Leg
A mini-Devotional
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24, 25
When I was about ten years old, my mother and I went to live temporarily with my Uncle Ed who lived in another town. I never knew much about him or how he lost a leg. He lived alone, and to me he seemed old and grumpy. I don’t know why he preferred to spend most of his time at home in his wheelchair, as I never saw him use his prosthesis which he kept lying between his bed and the wall. It had a sock and shoe on it and it startled me every time I walked by it on my way to the bathroom.
Thinking about that fake leg reminded me how it relates to the Body of Christ. Circumstances of the last couple of years has disrupted many “normal” things in our lives, which included how we did church. We are now free to assemble together again as a body, but many who previously attended on a regular basis have gotten into the habit of conveniently “doing church at home online.”
Jesus made it clear that each part of the body of Christ is important and necessary. He said that when one part is missing, the whole body suffers, just as my uncle’s body is incomplete without that leg, and that leg is useless lying by itself in the other room.
If you are one of those people who have not gotten back to attending church and are physically able, I want to exhort and encourage you to come back. We miss you and need the God-given gift(s) you have to contribute to the body.
Lord, we pray for Your church to be whole and to be about Your business as we see the Day approaching. Amen.
