The Desires of Our Heart
“Delight yourselves in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
Does God give us the desires of our heart? Yes, if we delight in Him. God is not a genie in the Bible, He doesn’t just pop out when we dust it off. I believe God places desires in our heart and fulfills them in His perfect timing. Does that mean that everything we want is a desire God put there? I don’t think so, not everything we want is beneficial to us or others. However, we have desires that God has put in our hearts if we love Him.
I always had a strong desire for children, but it was many years before I became pregnant. I had wanted to adopt children ever since I was a child, but I was middle-aged and had given up on that dream when God fulfilled it. These were desires of my heart that God had placed there but were not immediately granted. I had to let go and trust God’s will and timing.
There are material things that I might desire to have but they are temporal desires. They will not strengthen my relationship with God and, for me, might even weaken my dependence on Him. The desire of my heart needs to be God Himself, delighting myself in Him.
Dear Lord, help me to focus on You, delight in You, desire You above all else. Thank You, God. Amen.
