Sweetness

“How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103

One day while on vacation, I began to realize a growing restlessness. It was vague and slight, and it made me feel that everywhere I looked, nothing could satisfy. Nothing sounded fun, and everything we did left me asking, “Now what?” I felt dry and alone, though I was with my family. This was a tangible hunger and thirst, a parched feeling, an emptiness.

I chalked it up to being away from home, where everything looks and feels different. I was out of my routine, thatʼs all.

But a quiet Voice whispered to my heart, “Youʼre craving My Word.” Oh, I knew right away it was true! (Weʼve all had the experience of knowing immediately that a thing is completely right!) Godʼs words have become so sweet to me. His Voice, as it comes in His Word, is soft and beautiful, full of comfort and truth, peace and fullness.

I opened the Bible to read again those familiar phrases that give me hope and promise, that bring grace to my failures, peace to my restless spirit, life to what has died in me, and light to dark and fearful corners on my path. I was suddenly renewed, fresh, and alive again.

In Christ, God has quenched our thirst by providing the Water of Life, and has satisfied our hunger by providing the Bread of Life. Jesus: the Word, and Jesus: the Bread and the Wine, is Whom we seek, Whom we hunger and thirst for.

God knows our need, and knew it before the need arose, and made provision for all our needs from before the foundation of the world by sending His Son Jesus Christ to be all we need. He leads us to Christ, just as a good shepherd leads his sheep to plentiful fields and smooth waters. This is where our every thirst and hunger is provided for.

The written Word is ready and waiting for us to seek out all that it has for us. Wonʼt you spend time there today?

Dear Jesus, I know that You have the words of life for me. I pray that their sweetness would grow day by day, until I have no desire greater than to be filled by You. In Jesusʼ Name, Amen.
