Come to Jesus, Our Daily Bread

“For whatever is born of God has overcome the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:4-5

What is Faith?

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).

By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Hebrews 11:3).

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Faith is a gift from God.

How do we acquire faith?

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing, by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Jesus compared His Word to Bread in Matthew 4:4. Bread is a daily staple of life. I love bread, especially a warm piece of homemade bread, slathered with melting butter. It brings me comfort and satisfies my appetite. God’s Word will sustain us like homemade bread. It will nourish our spirit and make our faith grow. We find comfort, strength, and peace as we spend time in His Word. If you don’t have much time, trying to just read one verse throughout the day will make a difference.

Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” He was speaking to Satan, who was tempting Him to turn rocks into bread when Jesus was fasting in the desert. Jesus used His own Word to fight against the devil. We can use God’s Word to fight our battles, too.

What does faith do for us?

Faith sanctifies us, sets us apart, as belonging to Christ.

Faith pleases God. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

Faith obeys the Word of God. Faith trusts God. Faith believes God’s Word is true. Faith produces wisdom, humility, and dependence on God. Faith prays for others. Faith grows as we study His Word.

In closing, I hope eating bread and butter will remind you that Jesus is the bread of life. Feast on His Word.

Father, help us to spend more time in Your Word, for it is by reading Your Word, our daily bread, that we will see our faith begin to grow. You are pleased when we seek Your face. You are always there waiting for us, and Your Word is Your love letter to us. We worship You. We love You. We thank You for the gift of our salvation. We have only to believe. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
