Think the Same Thoughts

“The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying, ‘Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand.’” Isaiah 14:24

My mother and I have a close connection. We are not only good friends, but quite often we find ourselves thinking about the same things. She lives in a different state and we only see one another a couple of times a year, and we talk on the phone once a week or so. Sometimes I will call her and say, “What are you making for dinner?” And she will tell me the exact thing I am making for dinner.

On vacation with my husband, I was shopping in a tiny seaside town and came across a specialty shop that sold everything that has to do with birds. Bird puzzles, bird CDs, bird feeders, bird baths. A hummingbird feeder caught my eye: it was made of bright red glass, with flowers and vines molded into it. The feeding portals looked exactly like flowers. I knew my mother would love it, and I bought it for her birthday which was a month away. I knew I would never find a more perfect gift for her, nor would I be likely to find this same feeder again. I bought myself one, too.

When she opened the gift, she looked at it a moment, and said, “You wonʼt believe this, but I just bought this very feeder for myself!” I was speechless. I thought I had been in a specialty shop where they had one-of-a-kind items, but beyond that, all I could think was that out of all the millions of things a person could buy for another person, I just bought her the exact thing she already got for herself. She laughed to make me feel better, and said, “Well, now I have a matched set!”

I got to thinking about the connection we share, and how that sometimes manifests by thinking each otherʼs thoughts. And I wondered how magnificent it would be to have that same connection with our Lord. A connection, an intimacy so strong and alive that I would literally know His thoughts on a matter.

Of course, He tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9 that His thoughts are not our thoughts, because they are much higher than ours. But in a very real way, we know His thoughts by knowing His Word. He put the thoughts He thinks about us, and about all other things, into His Word. Knowing His thoughts is available to us every day!

Letʼs be diligent to know His thoughts as revealed in His Word, and to think the same things He does.

Lord, it seems impossible that we could think the same way You do about things in this life. But You have made those thoughts available to us! Help us diligently seek to know You more, and to set our minds on those things. In Jesusʼ Name, Amen.
