Growth Opportunity

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

Why is this happening to me? It’s uncomfortable and wasting precious time. This seems to be my first reaction when uncomfortable life problems happen. Yet more and more I’m learning to embrace and recognize the training of the Lord who loves His children.

“My son (or daughter), do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives” (Hebrews 12:5-6).

There is a Kingdom purpose for unexpected life challenges. This is what the apostle Paul says that is very powerful: “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17), and then he goes on to encourage us in our focus: “…while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal” (verse 18).

This isn’t always easy, especially when the world, and our circumstances, pull us in so many different directions. The truth is, our stability and hope is Christ alone. When we look to Him, we receive His peace which confirms and gives us confidence to fix our eyes on things above and not of this earth. This mindset enables us to press on and endure the trials and uncomfortable situations.

Recently I was stuck in traffic and getting frustrated and feeling very grumpy. I asked myself why I am so impatient and selfish. This is a growth opportunity for God to use and change my outlook. I still battled the grumpiness, but God did speak His peace to give a bit of consideration to those around me. To pray for the man at the crosswalk in the rain, to have mercy on the distracted driver in front of me, and to be blessed that I have this moment to worship and think about my Savior.

I know there are far weightier problems like the loss of a loved one, great concern for a prodigal, or severe health conditions. I believe we can give these over to the Lord and know “He will perfect that which concerns me” (Psalm 138:8) and His best outcome will happen. Keep focused, realizing “He is working all things together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Dear Lord, thank You that You are changing us into the image of Your Son, Jesus; and we can press on and keep focused on You, knowing we are in Your training. Amen.
