Frantic Friend

Dear Abigail,

My neighbor and good friend thinks that God should open up the ground and swallow the evil people of this world like He did in days of old. What she doesn’t realize is that she, too, could be one of “those people.” How do you share Jesus with someone who doesn’t understand the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?

Frantic Friend

Dear Frantic,

Your friend probably thinks that “those people” are evil, but that “we” are good. You can divest her of that mindset by confessing a sin God has forgiven you for. It may lead her to admit wrongdoing, as well, if you say, “You know, I have coveted things I shouldn’t have,” or, “I stole something once.”

Whether she shares or not, you have an opportunity to uncover the grace of God and the work Jesus did on the cross for all “us sinners.”

Point out that there is no way you would have been good enough for God because any wrongdoing would mar the holiness of God. It’s only by putting on the righteousness of Jesus that we become acceptable to God, and then the Holy Spirit (God’s divine essence) lives with and in us, helping us, comforting us, and giving us hope that we will be with Him forever.

We don’t get that because we are good. No one is good enough to earn it. It is Jesus’s gift to the world, no strings attached. Ask her if she wants it. Even if she doesn’t say “yes” today, those seeds of hope will be planted.

Don’t forget to pray for her!

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” Romans 3:23
