Desire For God

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.” Psalm 73:25

I want to ask you something and I hope that you will spend some time considering your answer.

Do you desire God?

This very question may well change the course of your life, as it did mine. It came to me from A.W. Tozer, who said, “I want to deliberately encourage this mighty longing after God. The lack of it has brought us to our present low estate. Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth.”

I had come to a place in my life where I wanted to grow, to be alive to God, to fully embrace all His words, His work, and His will for me. I was tired of the worldʼs hindrances, and the complacency found there toward spiritual things. Sadly, it is also in the church today, this tendency sit back and watch.

No, I wanted to be in the thick of Godʼs outworking. I wanted to be near Him, to know His presence, His voice. I came to a place where I didnʼt want to miss anything He might say or do. (Of course, since one cannot be in church 24/7, I knew it had to be something I sought “after hours,” outside of the church walls.)

And everything changed for me. I found Him to be completely willing to reveal Himself to me in the days, months, and years following my initial seeking. I am a different person in every way since that day, for, although it didnʼt happen overnight, I can look back and see that as the beginning of new life.

This may look different for each of us, but I challenge you to ask Him to do the same work in you.

Almighty, able One, get us out of our complacency! We are often in a rut of sameness, boredom, and disinterest. We want to know You more and to desire You above all things. Show us the way to intimacy with You. In Jesusʼ Name, Amen.
