Let Your Light Shine
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
It was two days before Christmas, and I needed to go to the store. I dreaded the outing, wishing I had not put it off for so long, as I anticipated running into crowds of people. But alas, the errand needed to be finished, and there was no more time to wait, so I determined to finish this errand as quickly as possible. But while I was there, I had what I believe were divine appointments. First, I ran into someone I had not seen in many months. She shared with me a personal tragedy she had recently suffered. My heart broke for her as I did my best to listen and encourage her. After that, in a different part of the store, I was able to encourage someone else.
I’m convinced that God uses the life of a Christian in more ways than we ever realize. His Spirit directs us to make decisions that seem random and arbitrary to us, or of little consequence. We may think we are just going about our daily business and taking care of the mundane chores of everyday life. But God had a bigger plan all along.
I also think that there are more times when we deeply influence the people around us for God’s Kingdom than we will ever be aware of until we get to heaven. Jesus told us that we are the light of the world, and so we cannot be hidden. The light of the Holy Spirit inside of us shines out of us, whether we are feeling gregarious and outgoing, or whether we are feeling shy and quiet. Whether we are happy or sad, people will notice the light; they can’t help but notice! They will respond to us in a variety of ways. Some people will be drawn to the light they see in us and want to know more. Some people will be stunned by it, and try to get away from it, much like when you turn on a light in a dark room where someone is sleeping who wants to remain sleeping. Either way, it is God’s Spirit in us who shines the light from inside of us to the outside world.
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for using us. Please help us to recognize that You are the light that shines through us, and that nothing is random with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
You never know where you catch people and how you bless them. Wonderful story.
You are absolutely correct about “the light”, as a soft flickering candle flame, which does light an entire room, is much more inviting than the overhead bank of lights! I have always tried to remember to emulate the ‘soft, warm light’ that will draw someone in, rather than one that would turn someone away. Perfect illustration of how God will use us at the most unexpected times to be of comfort to someone else. May God Bless you all.
