Desert Reflection

A Mini Devotional

“So He Himself (Jesus) often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” Luke 5:16

My dad loved spending time in the desert enjoying its peacefulness and tranquility.  He saw beauty; I saw stark, dry, desolation.

Desert seasons come into my spiritual journey sometimes. Times when my spirit feels dry and arid, my prayers are sandy and rough, and my relationship with Jesus feels sparse. Even my worship is shallow-rooted and prickly like a cactus. Just like my opinion of the desert, I feel stark, dry, and desolate.

During that season I’ve found I need to pray by listening more and talking less. The Holy Spirit has so much to say when I’m just still long enough to give Him the chance to get a word in. If I will quiet my heart, my mind, and my mouth, the Holy Spirit can remind me of sin that’s crept in—pride and arrogance, displeasing choices, disrespectful and unloving attitudes…so many wrong attitudes.

I might even begin to enjoy the desert seasons when I remember the Holy Spirit is there just waiting for me to wait for Him.

Heavenly Father, fill me with Your Holy Spirit again and again. Amen.
