Our Deposit

“Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”  2 Corinthians 5:5

The deposit God gives us is not one we have to return or redeem—it is a free gift to us. If someone secretly put money in your bank account, that would be a free deposit. You didn’t earn it, it would be a gift. “Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:6-7).

We are physically away from the Lord in our earthly bodies, but we have the deposit of God’s Spirit living inside of us as believers, giving us confidence and the promise that He is coming back again for us! God loves us so much, He paid for us with His Son’s life, giving us this deposit to guarantee us. Guarantee means security, assurance, a pledge, an agreement and a promise. I love having a guarantee in this life with so many uncertainties.

Having the gift or deposit of the Holy Spirit is one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. Feeling the Spirit of God move in me as a living and active part of my life is indescribable! The key for me is to daily connect to that Spirit within me. It’s always there, but to fully live and act in the Spirit I have to plug in to Him. I have to connect to Him, just as I connect to the internet on my computer. The internet is always there in the background, but until I physically sign in and give my computer directions, it doesn’t connect on its own.

For me, it’s similar to God’s Holy Spirit dwelling in me. On my own it doesn’t just happen. I may wake up cranky or achy and my mind starts thinking about what I need to do this day or my problems, etc. But the minute I begin connecting with the Lord, the power from Him comes and changes everything. When I come before God each day and ask for His Spirit to come and work and move with me, pray and offer my praise and thanksgiving to Him, my Creator, then I can feel His Spirit guiding and directing my heart and mind. Many times in my day, I get distracted and have to say a quick prayer to reconnect with His Spirit.

I’m so thankful God is patient. If you have not been asking the Spirit of God to manifest Himself to you each day and to show you where He is moving in your life, it’s never too late. “Now the Lord is the Sprit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Thank You, Lord, for Your free gift of salvation, and for the gift of Your holy presence living in me.
