“My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” Psalm 27:8 NIV
Seek His Face
I love the end of the day, when I can rock my youngest child and gaze lovingly into his eyes. Much of his day is spent in the contented flurry of an engineer figuring out how everything around him functions. He is a peaceful child, usually happy, but he doesn’t always slow down unless it’s time to sleep. I take this opportunity to lavish love on him. He sees it in my eyes as he searches my face. His little body is small enough to fit in my arms, and I hold him still. I whisper prayers over him; my hopes for the person he is going to grow up to be: a man of God who always seeks the face of the LORD.
This time is precious because all of the day’s projects have been put away, and I finally have my son’s full attention. He looks at me and I look at him. Even at this early age, I believe that this face time is feeding his heart, mind, and soul.
I sing him a lullaby, tuck him into his bed, and he peacefully drifts off to sleep. “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love, He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17 NIV).
The Lord has been singing over me, too. He rejoices over me in a way that I can only begin to barely understand because of how I rejoice over my own children, although we truly cannot imagine how much greater God’s love for us must be. How He longs to be the source of our focus; to be our place of rest and safe comfort, able to quiet any worry; able to calm every doing thing we do. He longs to hold us in His lap and let us hear His words of love calm our hearts to rest.
Two days ago, one of my older children took a picture of my youngest son and me. We are not posing for the camera, so what you see is a toddler drumming on an upside down sand bucket, and me sitting nearby, gazing down at him with unmasked love. I captioned the picture: “He’s a busy guy! And I like to think that in the midst of all my ‘busy’, God looks at me like this, too.”
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such a wonderful Father. Your love for us is more than we can ever imagine, so much greater than human parents can ever love their children. Thank You for this reminder to seek Your face. We will seek Your face this day, Lord Jesus. In Your precious name we pray, Amen.

Such a beautiful illustration of the most precious time one can have with a loved one, and a reminder that Our Heavenly Father looks upon us in the same way. So many memories are flashing through my mind now as I reflect, not only on me with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but when I think about those times that God was looking at me even when I least deserved that compassionate, loving smile.
God Bless You All.
