“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
Mother Says
My mother could talk. Not only was she extroverted, but she was a Christian public speaker, so it is no surprise that many of the things her children remember about her are things that she said.
Here’s some of our “Mom-isms”:
- fair to middlin’ (why couldn’t she just say “fine” like other people?);
- hold your horses (what horses, whose horses?);
- not the time nor the place (funny how we were never told when and where);
- haste makes waste (always said while we were cleaning something up);
- for cryin’ in a bucket or for cryin’ out loud (so much crying);
- good night shirt (neither parent wore a shirt to bed);
- oh, for Pete’s sake (Pete who?);
- if the shoe fits (one day in high school I said this to her in response to her question “what are you doing in my closet?”);
- you’re not going to ruin my day (this was actually true and I am still trying to master it);
- I’m as happy as a clam (it’s debatable that clams are indeed happy);
- garbage in, garbage out (this one was a full lecture and was usually given after we asked to go to a movie that was rated above a G and WHILE our hand was submerged in the compost bucket from under the sink).
However, when our mother passed away, there was no doubt what sayings we would put on her gravestone because God’s Word was on her lips more than any other thing. She loved and served her Lord until the hour she left this earth. It reads:
A GODLY WOMAN LEFT THE EARTH. SHE TRULY WAS THE LORD’S LADY, SAYS THE CHURCHES, HUSBAND, FAMILY AND FRIENDS SHE SERVED AND LOVED. MATT 6:33 WAS THE BIBLE SCRIPTURE THAT SHE LIVED BY
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Precious Jesus, help me live my life in a way that would glorify You and that Your Words would ever be on my lips. Let me leave a legacy of having constantly spoken of You and Your blessings to all that I love and serve. Amen.
