“Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” Psalm 119:97
Why I Love the Word of God
I’ve never loved anything like I’ve loved God’s Word. It has been my companion, my textbook, my counselor, my delight, and my comfort for many decades.
One day in my quiet time with the Lord, I felt Him whisper, “Why? Why do you love My Word?”
I immediately began to make a list of what His Word has been to me. It isn’t all these things at once, but at various times it has ministered in these ways to me.
- His Word has been a kiss that demonstrates His exuberant, spontaneous love.
- His Word has been a hug of warm acceptance.
- His Word has been a fatherly warning.
- His Word has been a teacher who knows absolutely everything and has unlimited patience.
- His Word has been a hand that holds me back from doing evil.
- His Word has been a knife that prunes out what is dead and useless.
- His Word has been a flower that opens one petal at a time to reveal truth and beauty.
- His Word has been a blustery day, blowing away misconceptions, bias, prejudice, and preconceived notions about Himself, about me, about others.
- His Word has been a roller coaster that turns my world upside down.
- His Word has been an open door to walk through into new lands, cultures, and glory.
- His Word has been a megaphone, blaring truth into my heart.
- His Word has been a peephole into the future.
- His Word has been a sunrise, where I can see a new day with fresh hope.
- His Word has been a sunset, where I see His brilliant glory displayed.
- His Word has been a good read, full of danger and adventure, masters and servants, friendship and betrayal, with kings and princes, warriors and kingdoms, queens and harems.
- His Word has been an armed soldier, fighting back the enemy so I can be safe.
- His Word has been a treasure map, pointing the way to abundant life.
- His Word has been a love letter, whispering His deepest feelings for me.
- His Word has been a shot of adrenaline when I was lethargic.
- His Word has been a course of antibiotics when my sin has made me sick.
I’ve found myself adding to the list almost daily, but I had to cut it off somewhere for this devotional. The thing is, when I review the list, it makes me smile. I plan to add to it often.
God has made His Word alive to me. The kiss, the hug, the flower, the sunrise, the map, the book, the love letter—who wouldn’t want these wonderful expressions of His love for us?
“Lord, how sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103).
Thank You for finding so many ways to express Yourself to me.
